Detailed below are the components which comprise of the 4 week Beginners Course, run by the club. These details should only be referred to as a guide and may change without notice. For full information use our Contacts page.
The course is usually held on Sunday mornings.
Week 1
The first item in week one, will of course be safety. We want you to enjoy your Archery and to do that you must have a basic understanding of the safety rules! Some of the areas covered will be:
  • Purpose of Waiting and Shooting Lines
  • Only draw bow at shooting line
  • Coming down from full draw
  • Also during the first week, basic equipment will be explained to you. Items such as bracer, tab, bow and arrows.
We'll then move on to establishing your dominant eye/hand. The process isn't painful, but will tell us whether you will be shooting Left or Right handed!
Once your dominant hand/eye has been established, it's time to select the correct equipment for you from the Club supply. You'll use the same equipment all the way through your course.
It's now time to put all you've learnt so far into practice! We'll establish a basic shooting technique and get you shooting.
Finally you'll be taught how to safely withdraw arrows without bending them or losing an eye from the boss.
    Week 2
The second week starts with showing you how to string a bow correctly.
We'll then move on to discussing some of the more advanced equipment you can fit to your bow. In particular the purpose and use of sights.
By now you've probably had enough talk, so it's to practice! Your technique will be observed and any basic faults will be corrected.
    Week 3
During week three, you'll be shown the different types of bow, their differences and the advantages/disadvantages of each. We'll then move onto discussing the types of shooting and the level of equipment that can be used for each.
We'll encourage scoring this week to show progress. We'll also explain 10/5 zone scoring.
You will also get an explanation of ends and different rounds, along with the handicap system and the classification system for indoor and outdoor archery.
We'll also take the time this week to explain the rules of etiquette.
    And guess what? More practice!
    Week 4
This week we'll take a look at some of the accessories your bow can be fitted with, and also discuss their benefit. Items we'll look at will include:
  • Stabiliser Systems
  • Clickers
  • Bowslings
  • Launchers, Rests
  • Buttons, Kissers
  • Arrow Pullers
  • Bracing Height and Gauge
  • This week, when you practice, we'll try shooting at greater distances and try to resolve any outstanding problems.
We'll also be describing other types of shooting, things like:
  • Field
  • Popinjay
  • Clout
  • Flight
  • Golf
  • Darts
  • You will also be told about various Societies and Associations. The structure of our Club and who does what in committee. We'll also cover Club fees and subs, Competitions and Dress. We'll complete the discussion with a questions and answers session,
